The Renault R35 Light Tank was the most common French tank on the battlefield at the beginning of World War II.

It used the same suspension and running gear as the AMR (Automitrailleuse de Reconnaissance) 35, which was built for use by the cavalry.

The Renault R35 had a short-barreled 1.46 inch (37 millimeter) main gun.

In some models, which carried a crew of only two, the commander was also the gunner.

Production of the Renault R35 began in 1935.

About 2,000 R35s were produced. Many of these were exported to Poland, Yugoslavia, Romania and Turkey.

The Germans captured some R35s. They gave some of the tanks that they captured to Italy.

The Renault R39 light tank was a variant of the R35 with a longer gun.
